The construction of a new solar farm is underway in the Village of Carbon Hill. Carbon Hill Mayor Adam Johnson explained to WCSJ how this came about.
“Out of nowhere, I got a phone call from them, and they wanted to know about any property in the area. And I gave them, you know, the three farmers that I knew in the area that own the properties, and then they ended up getting a hold of me. Like, got them in contact with them. I more or less stayed in touch with them, and then they wanted to work with the village because we’re smaller and get the revenue to come to us. Nothing against the county, but I mean, it would help the village out more. So then I kept working with them and then we ended up coming to an agreement. Now we got a solar field.”
He said the solar farm will be around 35 acres.
It is just under fifty acres. I think total solar footprint is right around thirty five acres. Of the fifty will be solar. It’s on the north side of the village. So that’s pretty big for us. Extra revenue since all we have is the carnival and Mustachios and Bums. So that’s good income for the village for the next thirty years.”
He said the Carbon Hill Village Board approved a few items for the project.
“It was a part of the village, so we annexed some of that or all of that property in. And then we, after we annexed that in, we had a contract negotiation, got all that ironed out, and got that approved at end of last year, and they just broke ground about a month ago. We should be getting right around thirty thousand dollars a year Okay. For the next I think it’s, twenty five years with a five year renewal, so basically thirty years. So, I mean, that’s good money for us. So we had hundred and fifty thousand…in the beginning, which we received, and we used that to upgrade our sewer plant. And then once they’re finished, we will end up getting another hundred and fifty thousand.”
Johnson said some people were against the project.
“I would say the majority of the population here was in favor of it. There were some that didn’t want it, which is understandable. It’s a lot of construction traffic coming in and out of the village, but we’re working through all those little issues.”
Johnson expects the solar farm to be operational by the end of the year.
