The Global Solar Council (GSC) has established a task force dedicated to accelerating the worldwide adoption of agrivoltaics, known as agriPV. The initiative was announced at this year’s Intersolar Europe event in Munich, Germany, according to the trade association.
The newly formed AgriPV Task Force, chaired by solar PV solutions provider Nextpower, is designed to unite leaders from the solar and agricultural sectors, as well as policymakers, researchers, developers, and farmers. Its objectives include advancing policies, sharing best practices, and building the foundation needed to expand the global agriPV market.
The task force will focus on promoting a deeper understanding of agriPV and its advantages, disseminating global best practices and case studies, supporting policy and regulatory development, encouraging collaboration between the solar and agricultural industries, and developing industry recommendations and thought leadership. It also aims to amplify the voices of stakeholders across energy, agriculture, food, and water systems.
In the coming months, the group plans to produce key outputs such as policy recommendations, case studies, industry guidance, and a position paper, all ahead of COP31 scheduled for November in Turkey.
Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the GSC, commented that scaling up deployment and awareness of agriPV worldwide is essential, and that specific strategies are needed to leverage this innovative solar application. She noted that space must be allowed for further innovation and research and development, with broad definitions of agriPV in more regions, particularly the Global South, to test how to best optimize both power and farm output. She added that Nextpower is well positioned to lead this work given its pioneering experience in the agriPV field.
The GSC AgriPV Task Force intends to position agriPV as a critical pillar of the next phase of solar growth, while combining expertise from both the solar and agriculture industries.
Studies cited by the GSC indicate that global agriPV deployment could unlock an additional 10 to 14 terawatts of solar PV capacity if just one percent of agricultural land were used. A recent analysis from the US trade body Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) showed that solar PV uses only 0.07 percent of US farmland, while a study from Fraunhofer ISE last year forecast that Germany could install 500 gigawatts of new agriPV capacity.
The trade association stated that the sector’s potential remains largely untapped, with regulatory frameworks still evolving, financing models still maturing, and many projects remaining at the pilot stage. The task force aims to bridge these gaps and accelerate responsible global deployment of agriPV.
Phillip Kunze, chair of the GSC AgriPV Task Force and vice president of business development and sales, Europe, at Nextpower, indicated that the question is no longer whether solar and agriculture can coexist on the same land, but how to make that combination work as well as possible for both.
Jonathan Scurlock, a representative of the UK National Farmers Union, remarked that when designed and implemented well, with grid connections enabled, agriPV can help farmers diversify income, improve land productivity, and support long-term rural sustainability. He added that the creation of the task force is an important step in bringing together the agricultural and solar sectors to ensure farmers are at the center of the conversation and that the benefits of agriPV are realized responsibly and at scale.
