India’s energy transition is no longer only an environmental imperative; it is rapidly becoming one of the country’s most significant economic and employment transformations. What began as a push towards cleaner energy is now driving investments across manufacturing, infrastructure, technology, and supply chains, creating opportunities for both skilled and frontline workers.
The scale of this transition is evident in the labour market. According to TeamLease’s Employment Outlook Report (EOR) H-1 FY26-27, the Power & Energy sector is among the strongest hiring industries in the country, with 71% of employers planning workforce expansion and a Net Employment Change (NEC) of 5.9%. Manufacturing, Engineering & Infrastructure has simultaneously emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing employment generators, recording an NEC of 6.6%. These are not incremental gains, they reflect a structural realignment of where India’s workforce demand is concentrated and why.
These trends reflect a larger structural shift. As India accelerates renewable energy deployment, investments are increasingly flowing into solar module manufacturing, battery production, semiconductor facilities, EV supply chains, grid modernisation, and clean-tech equipment manufacturing. This is creating demand across plant engineering, automation, advanced manufacturing, project management, sustainability-linked functions, and other specialised technical roles.
The electric vehicle ecosystem provides a compelling example of this evolution. The sector is generating employment not only in vehicle assembly but also across battery manufacturing, charging infrastructure, power electronics, fleet operations, and maintenance services. TeamLease’s Jobs and Salaries Primer (JSP) identifies EV as one of the higher-paying sectors, with projected salary increments of 10.2%, reflecting the growing premium attached to specialised technical talent.
The expansion of EV manufacturing also highlights how India’s clean-energy ambitions are fostering entire industrial ecosystems. From component suppliers and logistics providers to software and after-sales services, the opportunities being created extend well beyond the factory floor.
India’s broader energy strategy is creating multiple new avenues for manufacturing and employment. Government efforts to strengthen domestic critical mineral and rare-earth supply chains are expected to catalyse investments across mining, processing, refining, and advanced manufacturing. These capabilities are becoming increasingly important for batteries, electronics, and clean-energy technologies while simultaneously creating new workforce ecosystems.
Similarly, the planned expansion of nuclear power capacity will require a diverse talent pool, ranging from engineers and project specialists to safety professionals, construction workers, and technical operators. Green hydrogen initiatives, energy storage projects, transmission networks, and grid modernisation programmes are also generating opportunities for engineers, plant operators, supply-chain professionals, project managers, and a broad range of operational talent across the energy value chain.
An equally important development is the geographical spread of these opportunities. The benefits of India’s energy transition are increasingly extending beyond traditional metropolitan centres. TeamLease’s Jobs and Salaries Primer highlights cities such as Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur as emerging salary-growth markets, supported by manufacturing expansion, industrial corridor development, and enterprise investments.
As energy and industrial projects move closer to these regions, they are poised to become important employment hubs, creating opportunities for local talent while strengthening regional economic ecosystems. This decentralisation of growth could play a crucial role in making India’s manufacturing expansion more inclusive and balanced.
The next phase of India’s energy transition will be defined not only by megawatts added or emissions reduced but also by factories built, supply chains localised, and livelihoods created. Clean energy is emerging as a powerful engine of industrialisation, reshaping manufacturing capabilities while generating a new generation of jobs across the country.
As this transition gathers pace, the focus must shift towards building the talent pipeline required to sustain this momentum. Investments in skilling, technical education, and industry-academia collaboration will be critical to ensuring that India’s workforce remains aligned with the demands of a rapidly evolving clean-energy economy. The success of the energy transition, ultimately, will depend as much on people as it does on technology.
