Gujarat currently holds the leading position in India for total installed renewable energy capacity, reaching 50.386 GW. The state also ranks first in installed wind power capacity, with 15,850.56 MW, and second in installed solar power capacity, amounting to 32,302.7 MW, according to a press release from the Chief Minister’s office.
Gujarat has recorded over 1.3 million rooftop solar installations generating 7,408.10 MW, further underlining its diverse renewable energy portfolio. The state has become the largest contributor to India’s renewable energy capacity, accounting for 17.82% of the national total.
Gujarat’s installed solar capacity as of May 2026 includes 23,259.27 MW from ground-mounted projects, 7,408.10 MW from solar rooftops, 1,434.66 MW from hybrid projects, and 200.48 MW from off-grid systems such as PM KUSUM. Notable solar parks include Charanka (749 MW), Radhanesda (700 MW), and Dholera (300 MW). The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch, planned for 37.35 GW, has already achieved 15.54 GW, making it the world’s largest renewable energy park.
The state has installed 22,792 standalone off-grid solar water pumps in agriculture under PM KUSUM’s Component B, generating 162.62 MW. Gujarat’s wind capacity of 15,850.56 MW as of May 2026 is led by Kutch district with 8,191.42 MW, followed by Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Amreli, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, and Patan districts.
Additionally, Gujarat has commissioned 2,838.07 MW of wind-solar hybrid projects under the 2018 Hybrid Policy and the Gujarat Renewable Energy Policy 2023. Over 80% of turbines are installed on government-allotted land with strong infrastructural support.
An estimated 237,000 direct and indirect jobs have been created due to Gujarat’s renewable energy installations. To enhance ease of business and project implementation, the government introduced the Akshay Urja Setu online portal for streamlined grid connectivity.
Gujarat’s robust policy framework dates back to the first Wind Power Policy in 1993, followed by Solar Power Policies in 2009, 2015, and 2021, Waste-to-Energy and Small Hydel Policies in 2016, and the Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy in 2018. The Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy-2025, effective from December 24, 2025, to December 31, 2030, provides a comprehensive framework for solar, wind, hybrid, distributed projects, and battery energy storage systems.
This policy removes capacity restrictions, outlines tariffs and grid charges, and introduces the Distributed Renewable Energy Business Promotion (DREBP) scheme. It aims to accelerate renewable energy adoption through on-demand connectivity, flexible commissioning timelines, repowering of ageing wind projects, and seamless battery storage integration.
The government also promotes innovation in emerging technologies, private sector participation, renewable manufacturing and recycling, as well as consumer participation via group and virtual net-metering, and agricultural and rooftop solar schemes.
Currently, 1,531 renewable energy projects are underway, comprising 1,320 solar projects (3.377 GW), 115 wind projects (3.913 GW), and 96 hybrid projects (4.869 GW), totalling 12.159 GW in the development pipeline.
At the RE-INVEST 2024 event in Gandhinagar, Gujarat set an ambitious target of achieving 105 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, contributing 20% towards India’s national goal of 500 GW non-fossil energy capacity. The Global Energy Independence Day, observed annually on July 10, commemorates the commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependence and fostering sustainable development, reflecting the state’s alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s net-zero target for 2070 and his vision of achieving 50% electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
