Lexington planning commission proposes ban on large-scale solar in agricultural zones – WKYT

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Lexington Planning Commission voted unanimously Thursday to revise a zoning ordinance text amendment recommended by the Urban County Council that would have allowed large-scale solar projects on agricultural land.
The revised recommendation would prohibit large and intermediate scale solar energy development in agricultural zones.
Representatives with Fayette Alliance said they do not want to see Lexington’s farmland impacted by solar fields.
Others supported the Urban County Council’s initial recommendation that would have allowed large-scale solar projects on agricultural land.
“There is so much support for solar energy in our community but where and how that happens is at stake,” Brittany Roethmeier of the Fayette Alliance said.
Jeremy Jenkins of Laborers Local 189 said the approach “keeps lands and agricultural use while also generating clean energy helping protect farm land rather than removing it from production entirely.”
