KUALA LUMPUR (July 13): Gentari Sdn Bhd, the green energy arm of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS), has completed the installation of a 3.1 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic system at airport mall gateway@KLIA2 in Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA T2).
In a statement on Monday, Gentari said the works were completed by its subsidiary Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd and is expected to generate around 4,277 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually.
It added that the installation is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 3,310 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually at the complex.
The project was carried out through a power purchase agreement with Segi Astana Sdn Bhd, the operator of gateway@klia2. The solar energy system was installed across rooftop and car park areas spanning about 10,500 square metres comprising 5,212 solar panels, said Gentari.
Segi Astana is a joint venture between WCT Holdings Bhd (KL:WCT) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), while WCT Malls Management Sdn Bhd manages the retail operations.
The group said the deployment adds to the clean energy initiatives at KLIA T2, which include 12 electric vehicle charging points installed at the airport complex.
Gentari group chief operating office and country head (Malaysia) Shah Yang Razalli said the inclusion of solar car park structures also provides shaded parking for passengers and airport staff, on top of building upon existing sustainability initiatives.
“This project reflects the continuous steps we are taking to integrate renewable energy across our strategic assets,” said WCT Malls Management retail director Allan Tay.
The solar installation comes as Malaysia advances its energy transition agenda under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which includes increasing renewable energy adoption and reducing emissions across key sectors.
Gentari added that the collaboration between Gentari and Segi Astana reflects the increasing use of renewable energy within Malaysia’s transport infrastructure, as more facilities adopt on-site solutions to lower emissions and enhance efficiency.
