Construction has begun on what is described as the largest planned solar installation in the United States, according to a July 14, 2026 report by Solar Power World. The project, named Steel River Energy Center, is being developed by Cypress Creek Energy and installed by Moss. Located in Wilson, Arkansas, the facility is designed to include 2.5 GW DC of solar generation paired with 2.9 GWh of battery energy storage.
Work on the first two of three phases is currently underway. These initial phases account for 1.6 GW of solar capacity and 1.9 GWh of storage. The entire project is expected to be finished in 2029. Google has entered into a power purchase agreement with Cypress Creek for the energy output from these first two phases.
Google is also developing a data center in West Memphis, approximately 40 miles south of Wilson. According to the announcement of the PPA, a 2.5-GW solar project can supply power to roughly 315,000 homes in Arkansas. The majority of the electricity generated by Steel River will be covered by Google’s agreement.
Cypress Creek stated that most of the steel for the solar racking and foundations will come from PACO Steel in Blytheville and U.S. Steel’s plant in Osceola, which is located in the same county as Wilson. The project will utilize Nextpower solar trackers, First Solar modules, and LG Energy Solution Vertech energy storage, all of which are manufactured or assembled within the United States.
The CEO of Cypress Creek commented that the project demonstrates the viability of a domestic solar supply chain, noting that Steel River is the largest solar project with energy storage in the country and is being built entirely with U.S.-made solar panels and structural steel. Since November, Google has also signed a PPA for a 49-MW solar project in Ohio, acquired the large-scale renewable energy developer Intersect for nearly $5 billion in cash, and signed additional PPAs for approximately 400 MW of solar being built in Texas.
