Almost 4 million solar panels now cover 20 square kilometres of Abu Dhabi desert, and the sand-dwelling creature moving beneath them is turning a record-breaking power plant into something nobody designed it to be – ecoportal.net

Stand in the middle of Abu Dhabi’s western desert on a July afternoon and the ground can climb past 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
Nothing lingers in the open for long.
But step into the strip of shade thrown by a solar panel and the temperature drops enough to breathe.
That small physical fact is rewriting the story of what the world’s largest single-site solar farm actually is, and what it has accidentally become.
Al Dhafra Solar PV, inaugurated in November 2023, was declared the world’s largest single-site solar power plant, spanning more than 20 square kilometres of desert.
To get a sense of the scale, picture Manhattan south of Central Park, then tile every rooftop, road and sidewalk with glass.
The scale means visitors must be driven out to the middle of the park, and it takes several minutes.
The 2-gigawatt farm sits 35 kilometres from Abu Dhabi and features almost 4 million bifacial panels.
The panels were installed at an average rate of 10 megawatts a day during construction.
That is not a power plant by any ordinary measure.
That is something closer to a new landscape.
The farm will power nearly 200,000 homes and eliminate around 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions every single year.
To put the carbon figure another way: it is the equivalent of removing approximately 470,000 combustion cars from the roads.
Equipped with advanced tracking technology, the plant’s panels efficiently capture sunlight, and dedicated cleaning robots maintain performance by removing sand and dust.
Completed in a single phase, the project also broke cost records, achieving one of the most competitive solar electricity tariffs on record.
It pushed Abu Dhabi’s total solar capacity to 3.2 gigawatts, a number that was barely imaginable for this part of the world a decade ago.
In 2009, Masdar switched on the country’s first solar project at just 10 megawatts.
Al Dhafra is 200 times that size.
Most people picture a Gulf desert as empty: bone-white dunes, heat shimmer and silence.
The reality is more alive than that.
Sand gazelles, Arabian sand cats, desert hedgehogs, monitor lizards and dozens of bird species share this landscape with the oil fields and highways humans built across it.
The wider UAE region holds over 200 species of native birds and 50 species of reptiles.
All of them had to negotiate a landscape that was rapidly heating, shrinking and fragmenting long before the first panel went into the ground.
Then 20 square kilometres of shade arrived, almost overnight, in the middle of their territory.
Panels can offer thermal refuges for wildlife that would otherwise be pushed to the edge of a desert, along with new places to forage, roost and nest.
Sand cats, which survive weeks without drinking by pulling moisture from prey, are among the Gulf species best placed to exploit a cool pocket beneath a panel.
The farm did not set out to be a refuge.
It became one because the desert animals did not wait for permission.
Some facilities have built openings in their perimeter fences that let reptiles and small mammals pass through freely, and tortoises, rattlesnakes, jackrabbits and kit foxes have all been recorded using those gaps at wildlife-friendly solar sites.
In the Gulf the animals are different, but the instinct is identical.
A farm covering the equivalent of 4,600 football fields, as Al Dhafra does, could reshape a real patch of desert without a single extra dollar of conservation spending.
A review by wildlife ecologist Professor Trish Fleming from Murdoch University finds solar installations already occupy almost 14,700 square miles of land globally, roughly the size of West Virginia.
The same review cautions that poorly designed solar parks can harm birds and bats, notably by throwing polarized light that migrating birds mistake for open water.
So the shape of the fence, the choice of ground cover and the direction a panel faces can matter as much to a sand cat as to an engineer.
The good news is that nudging a solar farm toward wildlife-friendliness costs little.
Many solar farms now weave native wildflower meadows beneath and around the panels, drawing bees, butterflies and other useful insects.
Al Dhafra was built to move electrons.
But in the cool shadow of 4 million panels, something small and tawny is padding across the sand, and it does not particularly care about gigawatts.
It just found somewhere to rest in the middle of the afternoon, and that may be the most unexpected thing this record-breaking machine has ever produced.
