Chinese polysilicon and PV module manufacturer Tongwei announced it achieved a 93.08% bifaciality factor in a 770 W solar module based on tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) solar cell technology.
The result, which represents a world record for the bifacial technology, was verified by German certification body TÜV Rheinland.
The module has a power conversion efficiency of 24.8% and y temperature coefficient of -0.26%/C.
“Higher bifaciality allows the modules to generate much more power from the rear side—delivering a free energy bonus,” the manufacturer said in a statement. “For a 100 MW solar plant in Hamburg, Germany, this configuration generates an extra €180,000 ($294,786) in revenue annually compared to standard modules, unlocking an extra 81.62 million kWh of clean electricity over its lifetime.”
In July 2025, Tongwei announced it achieved 91.7% bifaciality factor in a 722 W TOPCon module.
“Reaching 95% cell bifaciality and 90% module bifaciality in mass production is a big challenge but we believe in the coming one or two years this will be possible,” the company said at the time. This result was obtained with TOPCon cell with a bifaciality of 94.3%.
The company’s researchers explained that the result was made possible by two innovations in the cell design – a selective sunken pyramid structure and a zebra-crossing passivation contact. As for the first one, it helped optimise the rear texture of the non-electrode area of the cell rear side, while the second one was reportedly able to improve the passivation of the n-type passivating contacts based on polysilicon and silicon monoxide (SiOx).
No further technical details about the technological breakthrough were revealed.
