Octopus Energy launches 100 controllable homes in bid to achieve zero electricity costs over a decade – pv magazine Global

Octopus Energy has announced the launch of a residential development project in Ille-et-Vilaine, France, based on its “Zero Bills Homes” concept. Located at the Domaine de la Massaye in Guichen-Pont-Réan, the project involves the construction of around 100 new homes designed to achieve zero net electricity costs within 10 years.
The initiative combines rooftop solar generation, smart energy management, and residential storage to optimize self-consumption and reduce reliance on the grid.
The model is based on a combination of photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, and home batteries, with all systems remotely managed by the energy supplier.
By coordinating generation, consumption, and storage, Octopus Energy aims to maximize self-consumption and optimize interactions with the electricity grid. However, maintaining zero net electricity costs over a decade depends on multiple factors, including system performance, electricity market prices, and the value of grid flexibility services.
The project also relies on residential asset aggregation. By managing multiple home energy systems as a single portfolio, Octopus Energy can optimize consumption patterns, grid exports, and flexibility revenues. The approach requires a contractual framework in which the supplier acts as both energy provider and aggregator, while also managing connected energy assets.
The “Zero Bills Homes” model has already been introduced in the United Kingdom and Germany and is now being adapted for the French market. The deployment will need to account for France’s regulatory framework, including rules governing self-consumption, surplus electricity compensation, and participation in energy markets.
Octopus Energy said it plans to expand partnerships with real estate developers and local authorities to reach 15,000 “Zero Bills” homes in France by 2030.
