National Institute of Technology Rourkela, an India-based engineering institute, has developed an AI-powered solar panel monitoring and cleaning system. The research team has secured an Indian patent for the system, which uses federated learning for monitoring and fault detection. It identifies contaminated panel sections and supports selective cleaning, reducing the need for regular human intervention across solar plants. Simulation-based validation has placed the technology at Technology Readiness Level 3, demonstrating proof-of-concept under controlled experimental conditions. Large solar farms can lose up to 40% of energy because of dust, bird droppings, pollutants, and other debris.The researchers plan to develop a hardware prototype with IoT sensors and conduct field deployments with government agencies and industry partners. The patented system operates at approximately 10% of the cost of existing systems, according to the research team.
