India’s Solar Generation Soars 57% in June, Outpaces Wind by a Wide Margin Photograph: (AI)
India’s solar power generation recorded a sharp year-on-year increase of 57.1% in June 2026, reaching 20,307.54 million units (MU), or 20.3 billion units (BU), highlighting the country’s rapidly expanding solar fleet. In comparison, wind power generation rose by just 2.5% to 15,256.01 MU (15.26 BU) during the month, according to the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) Monthly Renewable Energy Generation Report. 
The strong performance enabled solar to overtake wind as the largest contributor among non-hydro renewable energy sources during the month. Solar generation increased by more than 7.38 BU compared with June 2025, while wind generation rose by only 376 MU.
The trend was equally visible during the first quarter of FY2026-27. Between April and June 2026, solar generation surged 45.9% year-on-year to 62,791.14 MU from 43,044.62 MU in the corresponding period last year. Wind generation, meanwhile, increased by a relatively modest 5.3% to 33,562.83 MU from 31,877.68 MU.  

The generation growth reflects the rapid expansion of India’s solar capacity over the past year. As of June 30, 2026, the country’s installed solar capacity stood at 162.15 GW, up from 116.25 GW a year earlier—an addition of nearly 45.9 GW. Wind capacity also expanded during the period, increasing from 51.67 GW to 57.44 GW, representing an addition of around 5.77 GW.  
Overall renewable energy generation excluding large hydro reached 36,991.39 MU in June 2026, a 24.7% increase over 29,660.94 MU recorded in June 2025. Including large hydro, total renewable generation stood at 50,353.78 MU, up 8.4% year-on-year. However, the increase was moderated by a nearly 20% decline in large hydro generation during the month, reflecting seasonal hydrological conditions.

The latest figures underscore solar’s growing dominance in India’s renewable energy mix. While wind remains a key pillar of the country’s clean energy portfolio, solar is increasingly driving both capacity additions and electricity generation, supported by record project commissioning, expanding utility-scale installations and continued growth in rooftop solar deployments.
