A fire broke out on the rooftop of a three-storey village house in Sheung Chuk Yuen Tsuen, Yuen Long on Monday morning, with fire officials suspecting a solar panel system was the cause.
The blaze, which sent thick smoke and triggered explosions, was quickly extinguished by firefighters. About 10 residents evacuated on their own. The fire also damaged clutter stored on the rooftop.
Chan Kam-au, occupational safety promotion officer of the Hong Kong Electrical and Mechanical Industries Trade Union Federation, identified three main causes of solar panel fires: loose or aged DC arc connections causing short circuits and high-temperature arcing; poor sealing in junction boxes allowing water ingress; and wiring issues including poor grounding or substandard components.
Chan urged regular maintenance, including checking wiring and inverters, and cleaning solar panels two to three times a year with water or neutral detergents to avoid scratching the surface.
