FUNKSTOWN- One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation, and dozens of mutual aid personnel were brought in to help fight a major fire outside of the City of Hagerstown late Thursday morning.
Calls came in around 10:53am on Thursday, August 6th, for a structure fire at a home in the 200 block of Emmert Road, near the intersection with Beaver Creek Road. The fire was in the basement, where emergency responders found the blaze well involved. Additional issues became apparent as firefighters arrived because of solar panels being installed on the roof, which not only posed a potential hazard if the fire reached them but also complicated ventilation operations.
Crews from Funkstown were first to arrive, but Leitersburg, Smithsburg, and Halfway were all brought in to increase manpower due to an extremely high heat index and humidity at the site of the blaze.
News Talk 1037FM has learned that one firefighter had to be treated for injuries suffered during the operations. In addition, one civilian was injured during the blaze.
The blaze took about an hour to control, with 75 firefighters brought in to assist in the extended task force assignment.
Fire Marshals determined that the blaze began in the basement of the home and it was deemed to be accidental, starting due to improperly discarding smoking materials.
About $450,000 total was done to the house and its contents, with three residents being displaced as a result. The American Red Cross is helping out the affected residents.
