Lightsource bp secures permit for 390 MW solar & 300 MW BESS – Solarbytes

Lightsource bp, a renewable energy developer, has secured a planning permit for its West Mokoan Solar Farm near Benalla, Victoria, Australia. The project comprises up to 390 MW DC of solar capacity and a 300 MW / 1,400 MWh battery energy storage system across two sites covering 770 hectares. The BESS will feature approximately 224 battery units, each with 6,250 kWh nominal capacity, connected to 112 central inverters. The project will connect to the 220 kV Benalla Terminal Station and was successful in federal Capacity Investment Scheme Tender 1. Early works are expected in early 2027, with main solar construction starting in mid-2027 and completion anticipated in mid-2029. Construction is expected to provide up to 400 full-time roles.
