MaxSolar and DB Energie have signed a ten-year hybrid power purchase agreement combining a solar park and a battery, without public subsidy, for the Friedrichshof project in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
MaxSolar GmbH and DB Energie have signed the first hybrid power purchase agreement (PPA) covering a subsidy-free combination of solar and storage assets in Germany. The agreement concerns the Friedrichshof project, located in the municipality of Klein Belitz, in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Signed for a ten-year term, it combines solar generation with the flexibility of a battery storage system.
The ground-mounted photovoltaic plant, developed by MaxSolar, has an installed capacity of approximately 37 megawatts-peak (MWp) and is expected to generate around 36,680 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year, according to both companies. It will be complemented by a co-located battery storage system with a power output of 15 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 30 megawatt-hours (MWh). Commissioning of both the solar and battery installations is planned for summer 2027. This type of solar-storage pairing is also emerging elsewhere in the world, as seen with the 360 MW Sundown solar-storage project in New South Wales or the expansion of the Rockhound solar complex in the United States.
Under the contract, MaxSolar delivers the generated electricity, together with the guarantees of origin, to DB Energie, the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary responsible for supplying electricity to the rail network. Delivery is carried out under a so-called “pay-as-nominated” scheme, based on forecast generation volumes for the following day within the balancing group. The battery storage system allows the forecast feed-in volumes to be shifted in time, adjusting the delivery profile to the requirements of the electricity market.
Anwar Darwich, Commercial Director of MaxSolar GmbH, says hybrid PPAs form a central element of a next-generation independent power producer business model, capable of marketing a combined solar-storage asset without subsidy. Florian Reuter, Managing Director of DB Energie, adds that long-term power purchase agreements help secure supply and continuously increase the share of renewable energy in the company’s rail electricity portfolio.
MaxSolar intends to systematically develop and market its future photovoltaic projects as combined assets pairing renewable generation with battery storage, according to the company. The Friedrichshof project reflects this direction, as the growing integration of renewable energy into the electricity market increases interest in this type of commercial structure.
