While this makes the green shift more complex, a solar facility named after a fossil discovery simplifies it.

Ever since the push to grow its digital economy, power usage has increased to reach 4.20 trillion kWh.
Consequently, the national grid is under immense pressure.
AI data centers are set to expand further. Meanwhile, the electrification of industrial manufacturing and transportation will add to this growing pressure.
As a result, the American electric power sector still has a significantly high carbon footprint.
Its continued dependence on fossil fuels to prevent blackouts generates roughly 1.5 billion metric tons of carbon emissions annually.
This historic reliance is difficult to break, which is why federal climate targets are prioritizing renewable capacity growth.
Two primary national climate goals are to generate 100 percent zero-emission electricity by 2035 and achieve net-zero by 2050.
Solar power has been leading this urgent green transition.
However, the source’s spatial requirements conflict with rural communities, causing pushback.
To meet the rising electricity demand in the U.S., solar facilities have to scale significantly.
These utility-scale plants, often paired with giant battery energy storage systems, require vast physical land for development.
To minimize site preparation and construction expenses, developers usually target flat, open farmland.
Roughly 40 percent of farmland is leased to local operators in the lower 48 states.
However, when the land is leased to energy companies, local tenant farmers no longer have access to fertile acreage.
Consequently, tensions in rural communities rise due to disrupted farming supply chains. This impacts fertilizer vendors, seed suppliers, and equipment dealers.
Available farmland has also steadily declined across the country.
Between 2010 and 2022, Indiana lost 345,682 acres of farmland.
To reconcile the two sectors in the state, Doral LLC developed a dual-use solar farm.
This facility’s name was inspired by the discovery of ancient mammoth bones in Pulaski County.
The conflict between agriculture and green energy growth can be resolved.
Doral LLC partnered with 65 local farming families to launch Mammoth Solar across 13,000 acres.
The facility stretches across Starke and Pulaski counties.
The project’s first phase, Mammoth North Solar, uses 4,500 acres to generate 400 MW of clean electricity.
This is enough annual power for 75,000 homes.
However, beyond electricity production, the farmers continue to grow traditional crops, such as hay, wheat, soybeans, and corn.
Resource Environmental Solutions LLC is responsible for managing the land underneath the panels.
Native tallgrass and pollinator species were planted to stabilize soil, prevent erosion, and remove the need for chemical herbicides.
Almost 13 miles of vegetative landscape screening was also installed.
This features over 4,000 native trees and shrubs to adhere to local zoning rules and boost local biodiversity.
Furthermore, a diverse working herd was deployed, which is managed by Bope Farm Services.

Mammoth Solar proves that traditional farming practices can coexist with renewable infrastructure.
By using animals to keep grass low, panel shading is prevented. Reciprocally, the panels provide shade that decreases livestock heat stress.
The developers, therefore, turned local community opposition into a mutually beneficial partnership.
Ultimately, responsible dual-use agrivoltaic approaches can honor local farming heritage while accelerating the green energy shift.
