People who work at the solar panel manufacturer Heliene in Mt. Iron are being laid off. The company notified the state through a WARN notice. WARN stands for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
The letter to the mayor of Mt. Iron and to DEED states that the people impacted were notified on Wednesday, and the layoffs are immediate. It’s not clear exactly how many are now on layoff. But they will be permanent.
However, the company plans on paying the employees through October 4th.
The cause of the layoffs is listed as unforeseen business circumstances. “Heliene sincerely regrets having to take this action,” according to the letter.
When the plant opened in 2011, it was called Silicon Energy and run by another company.
