Deep Orange 17 integrates solar power into its main propulsion system instead of treating it as an auxiliary feature.
Clemson University has officially unveiled Deep Orange 17 (named Luminetta), a solar-integrated electric vehicle prototype engineered in collaboration with BMW’s research and development team. 
It has been designed to challenge conventional automotive limits. The two-door coupe functions as an energy-positive platform capable of generating more electricity than it consumes during a standard day of urban commuting. 
“This is a project we’ve wanted to pursue for years, so it’s incredibly rewarding to see this group of students come together over the last two years, overcome so many technical challenges and constraints, and bring an energy-positive vehicle to life,” said Stephan Augustin, Project Manager of Research and New Technologies at BMW.
