India crosses 300 GW non-fossil power capacity ahead of 2030 target – Power Peak Digest

India’s installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity crossed 300 GW as of July 31, 2026, reaching 300.50 GW, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The milestone represents more than 60% of the country’s 500 GW non-fossil capacity target for 2030.
Non-fossil sources now account for more than 54% of India’s total installed electricity generation capacity, which stands at around 552 GW.
The 300.50 GW non-fossil capacity comprises 164.59 GW of solar power, 58.14 GW of wind power, 57.24 GW of hydro power, including large and small hydro, 11.75 GW of bio-power and 8.78 GW of nuclear power.
Capacity growth
Solar remains the largest contributor to India’s non-fossil capacity. Solar capacity has increased from 2.8 GW in 2014 to around 165 GW in 2026.
Wind capacity has also expanded from 21 GW in 2014 to more than 58 GW. During FY 2025-26, India added 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind.
The expansion has also increased renewable electricity generation. Renewable energy generation rose from 190.96 billion units (BU) in FY 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in FY 2025-26.
Solar manufacturing
India’s domestic solar manufacturing capacity has expanded alongside generation capacity. The capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar photovoltaic (PV) modules crossed 200 GW as of July 2026, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014.
The government has attributed the expansion in domestic manufacturing to policy measures including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which focuses on high-efficiency, indigenously produced solar modules.
The increase in domestic manufacturing capacity is intended to strengthen supply-chain independence as India continues to add renewable energy capacity.
Next phase
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is also implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at supporting industrial decarbonisation and positioning India as a global hub for the production, use and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives.
The government said the expansion of non-fossil capacity is contributing not only to climate and clean-energy objectives but also to energy independence, industrial competitiveness and economic resilience.
