CFE Calificados signed a long-term coverage contract for Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ US$510 million La Esperanza Solar project in Campeche, combining 420 MW of photovoltaic generation with a 150 MW / 750 MWh battery storage system. The agreement secures revenue predictability to advance construction on the SENER priority asset, addressing growing power demand and transmission constraints across the Yucatan Peninsula. The commercial structure directly involves CFE Calificados, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Sunstone Power, an international banking syndicate, and industrial energy consumers seeking reliable clean power.

CFE Calificados signed a long-term coverage contract for Denmark-based Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ (CIP) La Esperanza Solar project in Campeche. The project, slated to start commercial operation by 2028, is expected to deliver 420MW of solar generation capacity to support grid stability and power supply in the Yucatan Peninsula.
La Esperanza Solar is being developed by CIP through its Growth Markets Fund II. Construction on the integrated solar and battery storage complex began this month in the Yucatán Peninsula. The development features 420MW of photovoltaic generation capacity paired with an Electric Energy Storage System (SAEE). The battery installation holds a capacity rating of 150 MW with a five-hour discharge duration, providing 750MWh of total energy storage. The long-term coverage contract provides demand certainty needed to secure project financing and advance construction.
The integration of photovoltaic generation with battery storage addresses the variable nature of solar power by storing electricity produced during peak radiation hours for subsequent dispatch according to grid requirements. This facility offers operational flexibility to manage generation output and support power supply across the Yucatán Peninsula, where electricity demand continues to grow, CFE Calificados explains.
The contract forms part of CFE Calificados’ strategy under policy guidelines from President Claudia Sheinbaum to diversify its supply options across various generation sources. Acting as a commercial power supplier within the National Electric System (SEN), CFE Calificados has expanded its long-term contract portfolio to assist large commercial and industrial power consumers in securing renewable supply and operational certainty.
Commercial Structuring and Private Capital
On Aug. 7, 2026, MBN reported that CIP reached financial close on a US$510 million debt financing package to begin civil construction on La Esperanza Solar. Designated as a priority project under SENER’s strategic planning framework, the complex is the first under this program to secure project financing and begin civil works.
The project relies on a long-term commercial Power Purchase Agreement with CFE Calificados to secure revenue predictability and supply renewable capacity to industrial consumers across the Yucatán Peninsula. “A contract of this nature provides demand certainty, a factor that is decisive for investments of this magnitude to secure financing and complete construction. In doing so, beyond expanding its own clean energy options, the subsidiary helps bring new renewable projects to fruition in the country,” reads CFE Calificados’ press release.
An international banking syndicate comprising BNP Paribas, JPMorgan Chase Bank, Natixis CIB, Santander, and Scotiabank underwrote the debt package. Project equity is supplied through CIP’s Growth Markets Fund II alongside an anticipated co-investment from Mexican retirement fund administrator Profuturo.
Targeted for commercial operation in 2028, the complex is managed through CIP’s regional developer, Sunstone Power, which holds 1,044MW in total generation approvals across Campeche between La Esperanza and its companion project, La Alegria. “This is a major milestone for GMF II and our team. We have been active in Mexico for several years, and this will be our first project in the country to start construction – a step that reflects both the strength of the team and the project and the close collaboration with contractors, authorities, and partners,” said Peter Halmø, Head of Latin America and Managing Director, CIP.
