Aayog has highlighted that India aims to emerge as a manufacturing powerhouse by 2047. According to the Commission, this would need to be pursued through a strategy. The elements of this strategy need to include scalability, competitiveness, innovation, and value chain connectivity. Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Ashok Kumar Lahiri has stated that India is at a critical juncture in its economic and industrial evolution.
NITI Aayog released its report titled “Key Sectors for Establishing India as a Global Manufacturing Hub” on August 13, 2026. The report identified four key sectors. These include chemicals, textiles, telecommunications and network equipment, and solar PV manufacturing. These sectors will help accelerate industrial growth, create jobs, and enhance technological capabilities. They will also strengthen India’s self-reliance and expand India’s presence in international markets. Lahiri explained that the experience of every major industrial economy demonstrates this.
Sustained economic transformation is built on a strong and globally competitive manufacturing base. Manufacturing not only promotes investment, innovation, and exports; it also creates quality jobs and boosts productivity. It also strengthens linkages across multiple sectors of the economy.
Together, these sectors demonstrate the breadth of India’s manufacturing opportunities. These include employment-intensive industries and basic industrial inputs. Advanced technology products and future strategic sectors are also part of this. Strengthening domestic feedstock availability in the chemical industry is a priority. Developing integrated manufacturing clusters is also important. It is also essential to increase downstream value addition. Textiles, telecommunications equipment, and solar PV manufacturing are also key sectors.
The report states that India has several inherent advantages. These include a large domestic market, a favorable demographic profile, and an improved policy environment. Growing infrastructure investment and global interest in supply-chain diversification also favor India. However, these strengths alone will not achieve global leadership. Import dependence on critical inputs is a major obstacle. Fragmented supply chains and infrastructure and logistics gaps also pose problems. Limited domestic value addition, technology barriers, and skills shortages hinder competitiveness.
Overcoming such hurdles would need a collaborative effort, combining efforts from the central government, state governments, industries, academics, and the banking sector. Involvement of the entire innovation eco-system becomes imperative. The experience of global manufacturing giants has been reviewed by the NITI Aayog. Policy stability, industrial clustering, and infrastructure preparedness become necessary for consistent success. Targeted incentives, technology investments, skill investments, and close connections of domestic companies with international markets make the difference. The Commission has stressed going beyond assembly line manufacturing and making deep and flexible value chain partnership arrangements. Young demographics in India would mean that a strong manufacturing sector would ensure prosperity through demographic dividends.
