What many Americans still think of as urban technology was recast in a discussion on the r/electricvehicles subreddit, where rural drivers argued that the country may be among the best places to own an EV.
The poster — from a small town in the Midwest — made the case using priorities that have long mattered in many rural households, including energy independence and low everyday transportation costs.
“EVs are ideal for rural America,” they wrote, pointing to friends who charged their trucks for free with solar power produced on their farms.
That statement drew in other rural EV owners, many of whom said that the usual argument that electric vehicles do not suit country life does not hold up.
“There is this rural hypocrisy that having unlimited electricity on your own land is somehow worse than having to drive 20 minutes to the nearest gas station,” one user wrote.
Commenters highlighted several features of rural living that can work in EVs’ favor, such as home charging and extra room for solar panels.

“Traveling THROUGH a rural area with an EV is difficult because of the lack of public charging,” another person wrote. “Living in one with your own home charger is great.”
The conversation was not without disagreement. Some users questioned how fast solar systems pay for themselves, while others objected to assumptions about who drives EVs and which places they are meant for.
Even so, many people in the thread supported the idea that rural households gain when EVs are matched with electricity generated at home.
The discussion centered on household math. For many rural drivers, the attraction is straightforward. They can spend less on fuel, make fewer trips to the pump, and have more control over how a vehicle is powered.
That can matter even more for people who regularly cover long distances to get to work or school or run errands and are used to watching fuel costs closely.
Charging a truck or SUV at home overnight can sharply reduce fueling expenses, and if that power comes from solar panels, those costs can drop in some cases to zero.
The thread also challenges the idea that EVs are practical only in densely populated cities. Rural households often have an advantage that apartment dwellers and many city drivers do not: They have private parking and a reliable place to plug in every day. 
If home charging is available, EV ownership in a rural area or small town can look very different from the usual story people hear.
One way to evaluate that is to compare spending on gasoline with estimated home-charging costs while considering whether solar is already installed or might be added later.
Even without solar, charging at home typically costs quite a bit less per mile of driving than filling up a gas vehicle. For households looking at a pickup or family vehicle, the conversation showed EVs should not only be part of a suburban or urban narrative.
For some rural Americans, they are a practical way to reduce transportation costs and gain self-reliance.
