Like any other sector of our economies, the agricultural one is dominated by some big names. Some include John Deere, Kubota, Klaas, and several others. However, GoSun was never one of the brands that has been known for designing, marketing, and selling a farmland tractor, let alone an electric one. However, that’s precisely what’s going on here today.
GoSun has always been known for crafting gear designed for outdoor use. Some of their products include solar cookers, portable fridges, solar panels, and so much more. One product that told the world that this brand is stepping into a more serious direction is their car-mounted EV charger, a product that countless readers all over the world tapped into to explore.
So, you can understand my amazement when I read that this team has stepped into yet another industry, one that has nothing to do what this crew has been bringing to the public until now.
It’s called the Moonrider 27 and believe it or not, it’s an all-electric machine that can punch out a peak of 27 hp, is rocking AWD, and designed to help farmland owners to reduce their costs from the very first day that they start to use it. Did I mention that it can be charged with a 220 V charger? How about a 1,100 W solar panel roof system (optional), just like the one GoSun is already known for?
That’s what these people are bringing to the table and if I may, I’m at a bit of a loss for words. Then again, maybe we should have, especially if we consider that GoSun has been on a bit of a spree in terms of launching new products, especially ones that break the limits of what we’re used to from the brand.
If you’re aware of their latest Gopher, then you have an idea of what I mean. It’s a three-wheeled vehicle that mimics the Piaggio Ape across the board, be it in terms of functionality or styling.
As for the Moonrider, it’s a rather compact tractor, rolling in with a wheelbase of 62 inches (157 cm), ground clearance of 10.6 inches (27 cm), and width of 40.9 inches (104 cm). Total length stands at 105.5 inches (268 cm), and height at 89.4 in (227 cm). It weighs 2,414 lbs (1,095 kg), so again, it’s not the largest around, and that’s part of its magic.
Because it’s a smaller tractor that what I would find on your average farm, the Moonrider has the capability to fit in some rather tight spots; the low footprint is strongpoint for this one. It has a 4.5-foot-turning radius.
Since we already know how much power the Moonrider can tap into, I do need to mention that the motor will be sucking juice out of a 24 kWh lithium powerpack which is enough for a peak runtime of 5 hours. Keep in mind that this is an estimate that GoSun gives us.
I must also point out that the Moonrider is also equipped with nine forward speeds, three revers, a dry, single clutch, and oil-immersed brakes.
In the recharge department, GoSun mentions that in as little as 2.5 hours, we can refill our batteries from 20-80% with the 220 V charger. But, remember, we can recharge this EV with the solar panel array on top of the cabin, but there’s no mention of just how long before a full charge is achieved by letting this one just bake in the sun. Unfurling the panels also creates shade for its driver.
Clearly, this runtime is sure to be affected if you’re putting this workhorse to, well, work, which brings us to its abilities. At the rear, a three-point hitch with a lift capacity of 1,653 lbs (750 kg) and a standard PTO with a power output of 22.8 hp and mechanical engagement. A two-lever draft control with ADDC is also in place. We can run mowers, tillers, blades, spreaders, trailers, and whatever else you can hook up.
Classic features like access from an app, the ability to geofence this bugger, and track it via a GPS are all part of what we receive if we choose to drop just $20K (€17,100) on this little EV. Interesting, to say the least.
GoSun also offers us a bit of an estimate as to how much cash the 27 will save us over a five-year period, mentioning savings of as much as $17K over that period. This remains to be seen, but on average, a diesel tractor can have you chugging a minimum of $4 an hour of fuel.
Moderate use stands at up to 150 hours per year, so you do the math on fuel alone. Then you have to factor in maintenance, lubricants, wear and tear, and so on. God forbid you need to replace a wheel or PTO assembly, which can run as high as $1,500. We won’t talk about engines here.
Now, for the time being, it appears as though GoSun has opened preorders for the Moonrider 27, and those that choose to drop the $50 reserve fee for their electric farmhand will have priority shipping during the first run of the Moonrider.
Is this the start of a new beginning for GoSun? It sure looks like it, but we’ll keep tabs on this brand and keep you updated as the news unfurls.
