Sicily’s newest solar farm will power hundreds of thousands of homes while sheep graze in the shade of its panels and forests grow back around them.
In the sun-baked hills outside Vizzini, Sicily, a massive 225-megawatt solar development is taking shape that looks nothing like a traditional power plant.
Grazing livestock will roam beneath elevated panel arrays, native trees will regenerate across hundreds of acres, and clean power will supply more than 135,000 households—all while the underlying land remains actively farmed.
To realize this ambitious vision, project developers secured $270 million (€234.1 million) in commercial project financing.
This milestone indicates that agrivoltaics is officially crossing a critical threshold: moving beyond small-scale experimental trials into a mature, bankable asset class that major global institutions are eager to fund.
The project is located in the municipality of Vizzini near Catania in southeastern Sicily—a region renowned for exceptional solar irradiance and long-standing agricultural production.
Developer Sun Project created the site blueprint, with Denmark-headquartered renewable developer European Energy arranging the capital structure on its behalf.
At 225 megawatts, the facility stands as a utility-scale clean energy installation by any global standard.
Once fully operational, the site is projected to generate approximately 405 gigawatt-hours of carbon-free electricity every year, providing a vital power supply to the regional residential grid.
Full commercial operations are currently targeted for completion between late 2027 and 2028.
Agrivoltaics—frequently referred to as agri-PV—combines utility-scale solar generation with active agriculture on the exact same footprint.
Rather than replacing valuable agricultural land, this dual-use infrastructure is engineered for co-existence. Across Vizzini’s 642-acre site, photovoltaic arrays are elevated 4.3 feet above the ground, creating ample clearance for crops, farm equipment, and livestock.
Approximately 820 sheep will graze freely beneath the panels, taking advantage of the artificial canopy.
The panel shade significantly reduces ambient heat stress on grazing animals while lowering soil moisture evaporation during dry Mediterranean summers. Ecosystem management is integrated directly into the facility design.
Over 222 acres are dedicated strictly to native woodland reforestation, while an additional 62 acres will be planted with traditional olive groves and prickly pears to preserve local biodiversity.
Securing $270 million (€234.1 million) in debt financing required an innovative financial structure backed by four leading international institutions: Crédit Agricole CIB, Intesa Sanpaolo (IMI CIB Division), NORD/LB, and Société Générale.
A decisive catalyst was obtaining a 20-year Contract for Difference (CfD) through Italy’s FerX government support program. This long-term agreement locks in guaranteed power pricing, shielding lenders from wholesale electricity market volatility.
Firm grid interconnection rights and rigorous technical engineering further satisfied institutional risk metrics.
Financial advisory duties were managed by ValeCap, while legal counsel was provided by Legance and Green Horse Legal Advisory, alongside technical auditing from Fichtner Italia and EOS.
Filippo Ricci, Italy Country Manager at European Energy, emphasized that Vizzini proves agrivoltaics can successfully transition into large-scale commercial construction and non-recourse debt financing.
Historically, combining energy generation with agricultural operations created complex multi-use regulatory and technical risks that made institutional lenders extremely cautious.
Market data confirms that capital markets are increasingly comfortable with complex renewable assets.
According to industry reports from Mercom Capital Group, global solar debt financing surged 69% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, reaching $13.2 billion.
European Energy demonstrated this momentum during the same period by locking in $78.5 million (£58.1 million) in construction financing from Danske Bank for its Indian Queens project in Cornwall, United Kingdom—pairing a 68-megawatt solar park with a 47.5-megawatt battery energy storage system.
Ultimately, Vizzini reveals the true power of agrivoltaics: transforming renewable energy from a competitor for arable land into a dual-purpose engine that protects agriculture, restores native ecology, and powers the modern economy simultaneously.
