Pacific to power remote mine site with hybrid solar and battery system – pv magazine Australia

Off-grid power specialist Pacific Energy has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Perth-based gold and nickel developer Rox Resources to supply power to the miner’s Youanmi gold project in remote Western Australia.
Under the agreement, Pacific will design, build, own and operate an off-grid power station incorporating solar PV, battery energy storage and thermal generation.
The hybrid plant will combine a 25 MW solar farm and a 9.3 MVA battery energy storage system, along with 11 kV power distribution to the underground feeders and mine village. The system will also include 25 MW of gas generation with provisions for 2 MW of backup diesel.
Pacific Chief Executive Officer Mike Hall said the PPA will provide Rox with the power infrastructure needed to progress the Youanmi project, located about 150 kilometres southwest of gold mining town Mount Magnet and approximately 480 km northeast of state capital Perth.
“Given the project’s remote location, reliable energy will be critical to supporting construction, ramp-up and long-term operations, and this agreement outlines how that service will be delivered,” he said.
“The system provides a practical, power solution designed for a remote operating environment and combines generation, solar PV and battery storage to meet expected site demand.”
Pacific has already begun mobilisation to site with Rox’s development schedule directed towards first gold in mid-2027.
Rox said the planned power infrastructure will cover the full Youanmi operation from the camp, to the mine to the mill.
The initial term of the PPA is 10 years, with extension opportunities available to support future growth in the life of mine.
The Youanmi project is Pacific’s latest remote power solution for the mining industry in Australia.
The Perth-headquartered company, owned by Queensland-based investment manager QIC, has 48 owned-and-operated assets nationally, and more than 1 GW of contracted capacity under management.
“Partnering with customers in remote locations and delivering the power infrastructure they need to move projects forward is exactly the type of work Pacific Energy is built for,” Hall said. “Youanmi is an important project for Rox Resources, and we are pleased to be supporting its development.”
