After a homeowner received a solar panel that was so damaged it looks like a golf ball hit it, they took to the internet to ask whether it was salvageable.
The person who bought the 430-watt Epoch panel, which arrived with spiderweb cracking across its face, was frustrated over receiving the damaged product.
Despite being damaged, however, it was still generating electricity. That left the buyer questioning whether the reduced output was good enough or if the panel was doomed. They took the issue to Reddit’s r/SolarDIY community and asked, “If the panel is cracked, is it just a matter of time before it’s finished?”
The original poster added: “It still produces power, decent power. It’s supposed to go back tomorrow. … If it weren’t cracked, it would be solid. Anyone else have experience with these panels?”

Commenters were not optimistic.
One said the damaged surface meant the panel was already sacrificing energy. They also gave a direct answer to the longevity question, writing: “Yes: It is just a matter of time before it’s finished. … And cleaning it would risk one of the glass chips coming loose and going somewhere unexpected.”
Another Redditor said some people try to keep cracked panels in service by sealing them but warned that the practice was “fraught with safety risks.” Someone else was even more blunt, calling the panel “definitely a goner.”
The problem with a cracked panel is not just cosmetic.

Solar modules are built to keep moisture out and allow as much sunlight through as possible, so broken glass can cut performance and shorten the panel’s usable life.
If a 430W panel is producing only a fraction of its rated output, the owner could lose meaningful generation, especially in an off-grid or backup power setup wherein every watt matters.
