JAKARTA – FAW Hongqi is trying to use the car body to generate additional electricity. The Chinese manufacturer made a prototype of a perovskite-based solar sunroof that is claimed to be able to generate energy of around 400 kWh per year.
CarNewsChina quoted Saturday, August 29, saying Hongqi announced the successful creation of the prototype on August 27. Photovoltaic or PV technology, which converts light into electricity, is installed on the Hongqi EHS7 electric SUV.
In conditions of sufficient sunlight, the sunroof is capable of generating power directly up to 300 watts.
Hongqi calls it the first perovskite solar power sunroof in the industry. However, the technology is still in the prototype stage and has not entered the mass production stage.
The idea of installing solar panels on the roof of a vehicle is actually not new. This kind of technology has been tried since the 20th century and has even been used on a number of mass-produced cars, although its effectiveness is still questionable.
Hongqi did not use conventional crystalline silicon on the prototype. The material is considered fragile and has low efficiency for the needs developed by the company.
Instead, Hongqi’s research and development team uses perovskite, a material that can be used in solar cells to convert light into electricity. This material is light, thin, and flexible.
Hongqi also claims that perovskites have a high light-to-electricity conversion efficiency, are available in a variety of colors, and are low-cost.
Its implementation still has challenges. Perovskite material is vulnerable to water, oxygen, and ultraviolet radiation. The curved sunroof glass surface is also a problem for the development team.
The prototype was installed on the Hongqi EHS7, which is marketed in China under the name Hongqi Tiangong 08. This five-passenger car has a length of 4,925 mm, a width of 1,950 mm, and a height of 1,680 mm.
Its peak power reaches 253 kW or 339 hp. The range is 475 km based on the WLTP test standard.
According to Hongqi, the full-sized perovskite sunroof can generate about 400 kWh of clean energy per year. The power is considered enough to support low-voltage devices, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, to sentry mode.
Hongqi next wants to install perovskite PV elements on other body parts, including the hood.
If the panel area is expanded, the company estimates that the car can generate up to 10 kWh of electricity per day. As much energy is claimed to be enough to increase the mileage to 80 km a day.
According to Hongqi data, this distance can cover more than 85 percent of the daily travel needs of car users in China.
However, the 80 km figure is still a development target. Hongqi has not explained when the technology will be applied to mass-produced vehicles.
This development is part of Hongqi’s efforts to strengthen its position in the battery-based electric vehicle or BEV market.
Previously, CarNewsChina reported that the next generation of Hongqi cars will use BYD’s fast charging technology. The technology is claimed to be able to charge the battery from 10 percent to 97 percent in nine minutes.
Hongqi has also started testing a prototype vehicle with a solid-state battery with an energy density of 380 Wh/kg.
