Paul Bernstein is absolutely right in his Aug. 25 op-ed, “Lala reveals power of rooftop solar” (Star-Advertiser, Island Voices). I have been saying the same thing for years and backed that up by installing a large PV system with lots of batteries to carry us through power outages.
Our grid is very dependent on a few major transmission lines, and those need to be backed up with micro grids and battery systems. Until Hawaiian Electric does something like that, it is necessary for individual homeowners to do it on their own.
The state can help with tax incentives and requiring HECO to reinstate its net metering program. Even without those incentives, though, such systems will pay for themselves within eight years.
