Aptera's solar car logs up to 47 miles a day from sunlight in independent test – The Cool Down

For most drivers, solar panels on cars have been more of a novelty than a game-changer.
Test results suggest Aptera’s three-wheeled EV could bring the idea closer to something genuinely useful, and the company has external validation to support that claim.
Across three days of third-party monitoring in Southern California, Aptera said TÜV Rheinland recorded daily solar energy gains of about 4.23 to 4.75 kilowatt-hours for its vehicle.
In a YouTube video reviewing the test, The Electric Viking (@electricviking) said that amount works out to roughly 42 to 47 miles of range.
Rather than infer performance from the panels’ rated output, TÜV Rheinland reportedly measured the system’s actual output.
Output climbed to 4.75 kWh on the third day when the hatch was raised to give the cells more direct sun exposure.

Even the lower result from the first day — when the car sat parked with the hatch closed and no one touched it — came in at 4.23 kWh, above Aptera’s stated 40-mile daily solar target.
That is why the creator said, “That’s more than the average person drives in a day.”
For people with short commutes in sunny regions, solar charging alone could reduce how often they need to plug in the car.
The video set Aptera’s test apart from earlier solar-assisted vehicle efforts that struggled commercially or never made much practical difference for ordinary owners.
Its unusually low energy use may be the key difference. Aptera’s vehicle weighs about 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms), has a drag coefficient of 0.13, and uses roughly 100 watt-hours per mile — far less energy than a typical electric SUV.
The launch edition pairs roughly 700 watts of solar cells with a 42-kWh battery and carries an advertised fully charged range of about 400 miles. In other words, the solar array is meant to supplement a very efficient EV, not replace the battery.
EVs can already save drivers money on fuel and usually require less routine maintenance than gas-powered cars thanks to fewer moving parts and no oil changes. If a vehicle can also gather some of its own energy, those ownership savings may become even more appealing.
Independent verification may matter more than any single number. Because solar vehicles have often been sold on ambitious promises, outside certification gives shoppers a firmer basis for judging what this one can actually do.
The next question is whether Aptera can manufacture it in meaningful numbers. The company has completed a validation vehicle and aims to start production with 40 cars in the fourth quarter.

For shoppers interested in lower fueling costs, reduced maintenance, and less dependence on gas stations, making your next car an EV can still be a smart move even if solar-equipped models remain rare. Choosing an efficient EV can lower operating costs while helping cut planet-warming pollution from transportation.
Aptera still has to prove it can mass-produce the vehicle, but the test suggests the solar side of the concept may be real.
