Düsseldorf, Germany, 10 September 2026 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, is implementing photovoltaic projects for the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA) on federal properties in northern and north-eastern Germany. The key aim is to make the federal government’s building stock more sustainable.
 
As part of the project, SPIE is currently in the process of assessing over 300 buildings in six federal states – Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania – to determine their suitability for photovoltaic (PV) systems. Implementation at suitable sites will take place in various stages up to 2030.
The BImA is the federal government’s central property management organisation. Among other things, it meets the land and premises requirements of the federal ministries with sites and buildings in its own portfolio as well as through new construction, purchase or leasing. These include practically all the federal government’s official premises, including the administrative buildings of various ministries as well as sites belonging to the Federal Agency for Technical Relief and the Customs Authority.

SPIE will analyse over 300 buildings in terms of their economic and technical requirements and develop site-specific solutions. On this basis, the multi-technical service provider is undertaking the entire design, installation and commissioning of the PV systems. For selected properties, the use of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is being investigated with the aim of making surplus solar power available later. SPIE is additionally responsible for the technical operation and maintenance of the facilities for a period of 15 years from the date of approval.

We are carrying out numerous photovoltaic projects simultaneously and encountering a broad variety of structural conditions in the process. To ensure that the PV systems start up reliably and operate effectively in the long term, we carry out targeted modifications to roofs and electrical infrastructure,” says Julian Merz, Managing Director of SPIE MBG, a company of SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria. 

Stefan Schusterschitz, General Manager of the Efficient Facilities Operational Division, adds: “With this project, we are making good use of existing infrastructure to integrate photovoltaic systems in a highly efficient manner. Renewable electricity will be generated locally, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions moving forward.
