A routine service visit turned into a $3,500 rewire quote for a Tesla solar owner. However, when they sought a third-party opinion, an inspection found the issue was far less severe.
Writing on Reddit‘s r/TeslaSolar, the homeowner said that Tesla diagnosed their malfunctioning array as being “wired completely wrong” and proposed removing the panels so the system could be rewired at a cost of several thousand dollars.
However, when the original poster sought outside verification, the third party found the wiring intact. Instead, the issue appeared to be two broken ribbon cable connectors in the inverter.
The homeowner said the episode fit a pattern they had experienced with Tesla solar.
“This is the 3rd time Tesla has attempted to scam me with my solar system,” they wrote.
According to the post, Tesla service visits often started with talk of warranty coverage or repairs costing hundreds of dollars, only to quickly balloon into bills costing much more.

Additionally, the original poster said Tesla’s installation of the panels had been flawed from the outset.
Redditors flooded the comments to give their takes and share similar experiences.
“That is insane!” exclaimed one. “You should file a complaint to the Utility Commission of your State.”
When a home solar system is offline or underperforming, it can significantly reduce expected energy savings, force homeowners to rely more heavily on utility power, and delay the financial return that often helps justify the upfront cost of rooftop solar.
For homeowners facing a large solar repair estimate, one practical step is to request the diagnosis in writing and compare it with warranty terms. Customers can also save screenshots of chats, keep emails, and maintain a timeline of service visits and promises. That record can be useful if a dispute needs to be escalated to a state utility commission, consumer protection office, or another regulatory channel.
A second opinion can also help clarify whether a proposed repair is actually necessary. In this case, the homeowner said Tesla backed away from the quote after they mentioned that a third party would verify the issue.
These Tesla stories highlight the customer-service concerns and business pressures surrounding the company.
While not about rooftop solar hardware specifically, they touch on some of the same issues raised in the homeowner’s account: support problems, consumer frustration, and the importance of an accurate diagnosis.
• Tesla has tried an AI customer-service solution as complaints about support continued.
• In Europe, falling Tesla sales added pressure as carbon-credit revenue looked less secure.
• In South Korea, battery-related subsidy rules threatened Tesla vehicles’ eligibility for government incentives.
