DHAKA, Sept 15, 2026 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has undertaken various initiatives to install 689 megawatts (MW) of solar power projects using its own financing across the country by 2030.
“We have prepared the PDPP (Preliminary Development Project Proposal), finalised the feasibility study and DPP (Development Project Proposal), and selected land for installing grid-connected solar power panels,” a BPDB official told BSS here today.
The PDB has placed a detail project proposal for 442-MW solar power project at Rampal to the ministry for approval. Officials is expecting that the project to be installed by 2030.
The Infrastructure Investment Facilitation Company (IIFC) conducted a feasibility study for setting up 222-MW grid-connected solar photovoltaic power plant project in Sonagazi, Feni within 2028.
He said the state-owned power board had already installed 688 kWp of rooftop solar power using its own financing between November 2025 and September 12, 2026, while another 4,195 kWp of solar power is expected to come into operation by December this year.
The BPDB invited tenders two years ago for the installation of 17 solar projects on its own buildings and land using its own financing, the official said.
According to the BPDB, a 170-kWp rooftop solar power system has been generating electricity at the Engineering Academy in Kaptai since November 2025, while a 130-kWp system was commissioned at the Chittagong Training Centre in June 2026, a 120-kWp system at the Rajshahi Training Centre on September 5, 2026, and a 268-kWp system at Khulna Power Plant on September 12, 2026.
Besides, the state-run BPDB has been working to bring 4,195 kWp of grid-connected solar power projects into operation between September and December this year.
The projects include a 300-kWp solar power system at Siddhirganj Power Station, 73 kWp at Katakhali, 65 kWp at Baghabari Power Station, 190 kWp at Bhola 225-MW Power Plant, 230 kWp at Cox’s Bazar Training Centre, 332 kWp at Kaptai Hydropower Station, 1,300 kWp of rooftop solar power at Ghorasal Power Station buildings, 187 kWp at Chapainawabganj, 390 kWp at Chittagong Power Station, 122 kWp at Dohazari-Kaliaish 100-MW Power Plant, 750 kWp at Shikalbaha Power Plant, 86 kWp at Hathazari 100-MW Power Plant, and 170 kWp at Ghorasal Training Centre, according to BPDB information.
Talking to BSS, BPDB Chairman Engineer Rezaul Karim said the solar power projects would be built on unused rooftops and land owned by the BPDB using its own financing.
The projects are also expected to help Bangladesh meet its climate commitments, reduce environmental pressure and encourage individuals to install solar panels on their rooftops.
