UP’s Solar Cell Story Gains Momentum as Alpex Starts 2.2 GW TOPCon Plant Photograph: (Alpex Solar)
Alpex Solar has commissioned a 2.2 GW G12R TOPCon solar cell manufacturing facility in Mathura, adding to a growing pipeline of cell manufacturing projects that could further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position in India’s solar manufacturing landscape.
Alpex Solar has inaugurated its 2.2 GW G12R TOPCon solar cell manufacturing facility at Kosi-Kotwan Industrial Area in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, marking the company’s entry into solar cell manufacturing and another significant step in the state’s push to build a more integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem.
Spread across 9 lakh sq. ft., the facility is being positioned as the first integrated TOPCon giga-scale manufacturing line in Uttar Pradesh. It will manufacture G12R TOPCon cells, a higher-efficiency technology increasingly being adopted by module manufacturers as the Indian market moves towards more advanced cell architectures.
For Alpex, the facility represents a major shift from its earlier focus on modules and EPC services towards deeper backward integration. The company now has manufacturing capabilities spanning solar cells, modules and other components, allowing it to capture a larger part of the PV value chain.
Ashwani Sehgal, Managing Director, Alpex Solar, said the new facility represents the next chapter in the company’s growth and its move towards higher-efficiency PV cells, while acknowledging the support of the Uttar Pradesh government and other stakeholders.
Alpex’s commissioning comes at a time when Uttar Pradesh is attracting increasing interest from companies looking to establish solar cell and module manufacturing capacity.
The state has traditionally been stronger in module manufacturing than in upstream solar manufacturing. The emergence of large cell projects, however, could begin to change that equation, particularly as manufacturers seek greater control over cell supply, technology and production costs.
Alpex is not the only company looking to expand into cells in Uttar Pradesh. Fujiyama Power Systems has already emerged as another solar cell manufacturer in the state, while other companies have announced or indicated plans to establish cell manufacturing capacity. Industry players including SAEL and IB Solar have also been associated with plans to expand their manufacturing footprint in the state.
This emerging pipeline is significant because cell manufacturing is a critical upstream link in the domestic solar value chain. India’s rapid expansion of module manufacturing capacity has increased the need for locally produced cells, particularly as domestic-content requirements and the government’s push for greater supply-chain resilience reshape procurement decisions.
The expansion of cell manufacturing could therefore complement the large module manufacturing base that has already developed across Uttar Pradesh.
The state government has been seeking to position Uttar Pradesh as a manufacturing destination for renewable energy equipment, with solar identified as a focus sector under the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Investment and Employment Promotion Policy.
The geographical location of the state also provides manufacturers with access to large consumption centres in northern India as well as road, rail and logistics infrastructure. Industrial corridors and connectivity around Greater Noida, Dadri, Mathura and other manufacturing clusters could further support the development of a broader solar supply chain.
