After calling in a service company about soaring cooling costs, one homeowner wound up with a far bigger expense on the table: a $19,000 proposal to replace the 30-year-old AC unit serving the upstairs.
On Reddit, plenty of people said the sticker price was alarming — but the explanation for the problem may have been even more concerning.
In a Reddit post, the homeowner said a service company reported that the older upstairs system’s compressor “is not performing well and it’s freezing up,” then presented replacement options that went as high as $19,000. The homeowner also said that after they mentioned shopping around, the company reduced that top quote by $2,500.
“I … didn’t renew our home warranty. Is it too late to get it to help with this?” the original poster asked.
Many of the responses focused less on the cost itself and more on whether the diagnosis added up. 
One commenter said, “If it’s freezing up, it’s not the compressor being the primary problem.” 
Another added, “Home warranty isn’t going to cover replacement of a 30yr old unit.”
