Q ENERGY has inaugurated the 11MWp Chênet solar farm on a former sand and gravel quarry in the French municipalities of Sapignicourt and Hauteville in the Marne department.
The company said the project puts nearly eight hectares of previously developed land to productive use for local renewable energy generation.
Q ENERGY added that the solar farm comprises nearly 18,000 photovoltaic panels across 7.8 hectares and will avoid approximately 2,900 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
The former sand and gravel extraction site operated between 1992 and 2009, with development of the solar project launched in 2021.
The project was developed in collaboration with relevant local authorities, government services, landowners and other local stakeholders.
Sheep also graze beneath the solar panels, helping to maintain the site while restoring an agricultural use to the former quarry.
“With the Chênet solar farm, a former quarry is now being used both to generate renewable electricity and for sheep grazing,” said Paul Colin, Solar Project Manager at Q ENERGY.
“This achievement is the result of constructive dialogue with local stakeholders, which enabled the project to be completed in just five years – a record for a solar farm.”
Chênet is Q ENERGY’s first operational project in the Marne department, while the company has been active in Haute-Marne for several years.
Across Marne and Haute-Marne, Q ENERGY has more than 300MW of installed capacity in operation across two solar farms and seven wind farms.
