DENSO announced on Thursday the establishment and months of successful operation of a new solar energy facility at its manufacturing plant in Athens, Tennessee.
The 18.8-acre solar field began operating in May on the north side of DENSO Manufacturing Athens Tennessee’s property.
It includes more than 10,000 solar panels and has the capacity to generate 5.25 megawatts of electricity.

Company leaders say the project is expected to provide enough renewable power to offset nearly 14% of the Athens plant’s yearly electricity use.
Through August, the facility produced more than 3,200 megawatt-hours of electricity: enough to power about 300 average U.S. homes for a year, according to DENSO.
The company estimates that production also prevented about 1,125 metric tons of carbon emissions.

DENSO partnered with renewable energy company Solarity on the project, with support from GridMarket, the Athens Utilities Board, and TVA.
The Athens facility is one of DENSO’s largest onsite renewable energy installations in North America and follows a solar project launched last year at the company’s Maryville plant.
DENSO says the investments are part of its goal to make its products, processes and facilities carbon neutral by 2035.
