Sumitomo, a Japanese trading company, has invested in a utility-scale renewable energy park in India that combines solar photovoltaic, wind and energy storage, according to pv-tech. The project is being developed by Hero Future Energies, an Indian independent power producer, and will pair 500MW of solar PV and wind power with a co-located 200MWh battery energy storage system.
The hybrid project is described as being at an advanced stage and will be situated in the south-western Indian state of Karnataka. It is intended to supply round-the-clock electricity primarily to SJVN Limited, a government-owned utility, under a 25-year power purchase agreement. Electricity generated beyond that commitment will be sold on the power exchange market, the Japanese trading company said.
Under the investment, Sumitomo will take a 49% stake in Clean Solar Power (Baniyana), the company carrying out the hybrid renewable energy project. The remaining ownership will sit with a subsidiary of Hero Future Energies.
The commercial operation date for the project is planned for March 2027.
Jun Minase, general manager of the overseas energy solution strategic business unit at Sumitomo Corporation, commented that the company is pleased to work with Hero Future Energies and sees significant potential in the developer’s clearly defined growth ambitions, especially as renewable energy’s share of India’s energy mix continues to expand rapidly. He added that the partnership will strengthen Sumitomo’s renewable energy business platform in India while pursuing new opportunities that support a stable supply of renewable energy.
