MANNA FoodBank, which operates out of North Carolina, has finished installing a 514-kW rooftop solar array at its Mills River office and warehouse site. Pisgah Energy handled the installation, which uses SEG panels alongside SolarEdge inverters, and the setup should generate over 643,000 kWh each year.
Evan Becka, who serves as president of Pisgah Energy, called the installation an honor and noted that drawing on solar power for operations is yet another means by which the organization advances health and well-being for families in Western North Carolina.
MANNA also views the initiative as a way to safeguard the durability of its operations over time. By trimming recurring energy expenses, the organization can deploy its resources more effectively and preserve more funding for its central mission of sourcing, storing and distributing food across Western North Carolina and the Qualla Boundary.
Such careful management matters more than ever as households throughout the region keep confronting serious economic strain. MANNA and a partner network exceeding 300 community organizations now handle roughly 220,000 visits per month on average, spanning 16 counties and the Qualla Boundary. With housing, food, utilities, transportation and other essentials growing more expensive, household budgets remain under pressure, which makes sustainable practices within MANNA’s own operations a key element of meeting present and future needs alike.
Claire Neal, CEO of MANNA FoodBank, stated that any dollar used more efficiently stretches further in service to communities. Neal observed that with neighbors across Western North Carolina seeking food support from MANNA and its partners at unprecedented levels, the organization must weigh the long-term sustainability of its efforts. She added that investments of this kind lower recurring costs while forging a stronger, more resilient food bank capable of serving the region for years ahead.
Pisgah Energy secured partnerships for the effort, among them backing from the Footprint Project, a $55,000 donation of solar panel racking from Enstall, and a $200,000 BuildUS grant aimed at boosting energy resiliency in rural Western North Carolina. Combined with the nonprofit direct pay incentive, this funding should allow MANNA to achieve an estimated 4.5-year payback on the investment, releasing essential dollars for buying and distributing food.
