Independent power producer (IPP) Elgin has taken on a 40MWp solar power plant in County Kilkenny, Ireland.
The 37MW Kilderry Solar project is awaiting construction and was brought through early development by Baywa r.e., which received planning consent for the project in October 2024.
The deal, financial details of which were not disclosed, follows the IPP’s acquisition of the 200MW Blackhall solar plant in County Meath in September.
Elgin noted the proximity of the site to other projects it owns in Ireland, making the project a “strong strategic fit”. It added that the investment supports its ambition to contribute to Ireland’s energy transition and long-term energy security.
The IPP has a large number of projects in Ireland awaiting construction. Per Solar Media Market Research, it has about 1GWp in planning and operational in the country, with just over 60% of that capacity currently awaiting construction.

Its transition to an IPP, a move many developers are making in recent years as value shifts away from development to execution and operation, came after it commissioned the Edgeworthstown Solar Farm in Ireland.
Elgin secures revenue for its projects partly through government schemes, with many of its UK projects receiving Contracts for Difference (CfDs); in Auction Round 7 (AR7) which concluded in February, Elgin won the second-most contracts of any developer, across eight projects, totalling 382MW.
It said when it took on Blackhall that the acquisition would increase its capacity eligible for participation in the sixth round of Ireland’s Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS). In the case of the Kilderry solar farm, it would technically have had to be Baywa r.e. that bid for the support scheme if it secures a RESS 6 contract, as the qualification window was 30 July to 27 August.
