Rooftop solar output in Australia’s National Electricity Market reached a new all-time high of 17,488 MW at noon on Sunday, according to pv magazine. The publication reported that the fresh peak exceeds the prior record of 16,993 MW set only two weeks earlier by 495 MW, and stands 2,388 MW, or 15.81%, above the 15,100 MW recorded on 4 October 2025.
Geoff Eldridge of Global Power Energy, through its GPE NEMLog service, described the milestone as part of a remarkable run that has produced four new records across three regions in just five days. At the moment rooftop solar hit its new high, the combined share of distributed PV and utility-scale solar in NEM consumption reached a record 72.29%, compared with 70.80% on 12 September 2026.
On Wednesday, 7 October, Victoria posted 4,191 MW of rooftop solar generation, above its earlier high of 4,036 MW set in January this year. Renewables accounted for 65.9% of the state’s total generation during that peak interval.
South Australia also set a new rooftop solar peak of 2,070 MW on 7 October, exceeding the previous peak of 1,970 MW set two weeks earlier. Renewables covered 96.3% of the state’s total electricity demand at the time of that high.
On Friday, 9 October, New South Wales recorded a new rooftop solar generation peak of 6,346 MW, which was 241 MW above the previous record of 6,106 MW set nine days earlier.
Eldridge noted that the new peaks are instantaneous output records rather than daily energy production records, while adding that they demonstrate the growing contribution of renewable energy across the NEM. He said they reinforce the expanding contribution of consumer energy resources and the changing daytime operating environment across the market.
The Australian Energy Market Operator reported that between 1 January and 30 September 2026, renewable energy accounted for an average of 44% of all electricity generation across the NEM. Roughly 4 million Australian homes and small businesses have adopted rooftop solar, with an estimated 22 GW of rooftop PV capacity installed, and 2026 is on track to be a record year for installations.
