Grace Episcopal Church of Bainbridge Island invites the community to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and solar energy workshop Oct. 17 from 9 -11 a.m. This event marks the completion of the solar installation at Grace, which reduces operating costs and generates clean electricity for the church.
The endeavor has expanded the church’s ability to serve its congregation and the broader community for years to come, with the added benefit of reduced carbon emissions, a news release says. The solar project will reduce the church’s annual energy burden by an average of $10,470 per year over the 30-year lifespan. Over its lifetime, the installation is projected to produce 846 megawatt-hours of clean, renewable electricity. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse gas equivalencies, it will offset 28,891 pounds of CO2 emissions annually. That is equivalent to the amount of carbon captured by 13 acres of U.S. forest land every year, or 3 homes’ electricity use for one year, per the release.
The project includes 73 solar panels across the church’s roof. Cascadia Solar designed and installed the system. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, project partners will provide a presentation featuring information about the project, how solar power works, and how people interested in solar can learn more. Light refreshments will be provided.
The project is funded by a grant from the state Department of Commerce Clean Energy Community Grants program, which is supported with funding from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act.
“Grace Episcopal Church is honored to join the solar energy community in Kitsap County. Caring for our earth has never been more important,” said The Reverend Eric Mason, Grace Episcopal Church.
