Grimaldi opens a vertical car park and a photovoltaic plant at the port – Diari ARA

BarcelonaThe president of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell; the CEO of the Grimaldi Group in Spain, Mario Massarotti, and the Director of Institutional Relations, Miguel Pardo, inaugurated this Tuesday the new vertical parking facility at the port with a photovoltaic plant on the roof. The new parking facility, located next to the Grimaldi Terminal, has a capacity for nearly 2,000 new vehicles and more than 6,200 square meters of solar panels, which will produce 1,695 MWh annually, an amount exceeding the terminal’s consumption.
The final objective is to connect the photovoltaic plant to the grid to avoid production losses, and in any case, a battery plant with a capacity of 1.3 MW has been installed. Carbonell stated that this infrastructure is a sign “of Grimaldi’s trust in the Port and its community” and that they are responding to the need to better utilize space by growing vertically.
Massarotti highlighted the company’s commitment to promoting the ecological transition in transport and underscored that, so far, the company has invested 50 million euros in the Port of Barcelona. In this regard, the head of the shipping company explained that the silo will serve for the storage of new vehicles, especially those coming from China, as he stated that the Asian country exports 250,000 cars to Spain every year and they need this storage capacity.
In this regard, the CEO of Grimaldi in Spain explained that they have incorporated 17 car carriers into their fleet, 14 of which are already operating, and that they have purchased 10 more to increase this fleet in the coming years. For his part, Pardo highlighted that the terminal can no longer grow in surface area, which is why they have opted for vertical growth, a fact that has allowed them to gain 37,500 square meters of surface area.
