TRAFFIX Expands Freight Planning for Larger Solar Panels and Battery Storage Systems – citybiz

TRAFFIX is adapting its renewable energy logistics operations to accommodate larger solar panels, heavier battery storage systems and increasingly specialized transportation requirements across North America.
The Chicago-based third-party logistics provider said changes in equipment dimensions and weight are creating additional challenges for developers, manufacturers and suppliers managing solar and energy storage projects.
Solar modules measuring approximately seven feet long and lithium-based battery storage systems transported in 20-foot containers require specialized freight equipment, handling procedures and delivery planning. Inadequate preparation can increase transportation costs, damage risks and project delays.
“Solar projects are planned months or even years ahead, while transportation is often managed reactively once product is ready to move,” said Craig Wadas, vice president of national accounts at TRAFFIX.
The company is integrating customers’ enterprise resource planning data, inventory information and construction schedules into transportation planning to secure appropriate equipment and capacity before shipments are ready.
TRAFFIX is also evaluating intermodal transportation for long-distance shipments from ports to inland renewable energy project sites. Combining rail and trucking can provide additional capacity options, improve cost predictability and potentially reduce transportation emissions.
The company reported handling more than 2 million square feet of solar product in warehouse operations, managing over 2 gigawatts of solar panels and coordinating approximately 6,000 truckloads of solar-related freight.
Its renewable energy logistics operations are supported by more than 50 specialists and include hazardous materials handling, shipment consolidation and end-of-life recycling services for battery storage equipment.
Founded in 1979, TRAFFIX provides truckload, flatbed, intermodal, drayage, expedited and managed transportation services throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
