Intera’s 960 MWh Summerfield battery in SA enters commissioning – pv magazine Australia

The major milestone for the Intera Renewables-owned 240 MW / 960 MWh Summerfield battery energy storage system (BESS) was announced by e-Storage, the energy storage-focused subsidiary of PV giant Canadian Solar.
e-Storage is delivering the project for Intera, the clean energy investment platform of Australian asset manager Palisade Investment Partners, under a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract.
The Canadian group has supplied and integrated more than 200 of its SolBank 3.0 battery containers for the project, located in the Murraylands region near Mannum, about 55 kilometres east of Adelaide, and also has a long-term service agreement in place covering performance and operations of the BESS.
In its latest project update, Intera said testing and commissioning activities, along with rehabilitation of temporary construction and support areas, will continue until the end of the year with the four-hour BESS expected to commence full operations in 2027.
The company said once operational, Summerfield will add 240 MW of battery storage capacity to the network, playing an important role in supporting South Australia’s grid stability and energy storage needs as the state moves toward 100% renewables.
“Once fully operational, the Summerfield BESS will support South Australia’s clean energy ambitions by storing more affordable renewable energy when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing and releasing it into the grid when it is needed most,” the company said.
The Summerfield BESS project was acquired by Palisade through Intera earlier this year from Danish renewables giant Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP)
The project is underpinned by a long-term offtake agreement with electricity generator and retailer Origin Energy which has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement to buy 100% of the facilities output.
