Ameresco has completed a solar-plus-storage installation at the main office of the Roseburg Urban Sanitary Authority in Oregon, according to a news item from Ameresco. The roughly $1 million project marks the start of a multi-phase energy program intended to improve resilience, sustainability and cost-effectiveness across the authority’s main office, wastewater treatment plant and natural treatment system.
The first phase pairs a 39.4-kW solar system with an 184-kWh battery energy storage system. The solar array is designed to produce about 51,580 kWh each year and to offset all electricity consumed at the main office, while the battery is meant to keep critical administrative and operational functions running when power is disrupted.
Funding came from more than one source, including an $870,870 grant from the Oregon Department of Energy’s Community Renewable Energy Program and support from the Energy Trust of Oregon.
Jim Baird, general manager of the Roseburg Urban Sanitary Authority, said the partnership with Ameresco lets the authority modernize its facilities and protect the community’s long-term well-being. He said smarter energy use and resilient infrastructure investments support reliable wastewater management and continued service for customers in routine operations and critical situations.
The second and third phases call for a 900-kW ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system at the wastewater treatment plant and a 400-kW floating solar photovoltaic system at the natural treatment system. Construction on those projects is expected to begin before the end of the year.
Louis Maltezos, co-president of Ameresco, said wastewater treatment facilities consume substantial amounts of energy, which makes initiatives such as the authority’s important for building a more efficient energy future. He said the collaboration demonstrates how public organizations can adopt forward-looking strategies that reduce emissions, lower costs and strengthen community quality of life.
