London Stansted Airport has reached two significant milestones in its transformation programme, with its new 12.8 MW on-site solar farm now operational and enabling works completed for the next phase of its terminal extension.
The solar farm has begun helping power the airport, supporting its long-term sustainability ambitions. Meanwhile, the removal of the airside passenger bussing facility and link bridge has cleared the way for foundation works to begin on the terminal extension, marking the transition from demolition to construction.
The developments come as Stansted recorded its busiest September on record, welcoming 2.88 million passengers during the month. This represents a 6.4% increase compared with September last year and exceeds the previous September record, set in 2024, by 170,000 passengers.
The airport recorded 12 days in September when passenger numbers exceeded 100,000, a level it had never previously surpassed during the month. Its rolling 12-month passenger total reached 30.87 million, up 2.9% on 2025.
London Stansted Managing Director Gareth Powell said the airport’s transformation programme was progressing alongside continued passenger growth, with the projects intended to enhance the passenger experience while supporting its long-term sustainability objectives.
The airport is now preparing for the October half-term holiday period, which is expected to bring another busy spell for passengers and airport teams.
