Solar repowering guide shows installers how to tap into the aging rooftop market – pv magazine Global

To help residential contractors capitalize on the growing wave of aging photovoltaic systems, Tigo Energy has released a comprehensive guide titled the Repowering Business Playbook. Designed as a step-by-step manual, the document outlines practical strategies for solar professionals to transition from traditional new construction into profitable, recurring service and modernization models.
The surge in solar project repowering demand is fueled by aging hardware and changing homeowner priorities. While solar modules frequently maintain productivity for decades, supporting balance-of-system components such as string inverters, rapid shutdown devices, and monitoring hardware face much shorter service lifespans.
Simultaneously, broader industry consolidation and the closure of numerous installation companies over the past decade have left millions of homeowners without their original service providers. This leaves a massive installed base searching for qualified independent professionals to handle routine maintenance, inverter failures, and warranty claims.
The playbook strategies are backed by growing commercial momentum on the ground, with Tigo technology already enabling more than 11 MW of solar repowering projects across aging and orphaned residential installations. Recent deployment milestones, such as major partnerships surpassing 1,000 individual inverter replacements, demonstrate that field experience is rapidly catching up with long-term market forecasts.
Modern homeowners demand significantly more functionality from their rooftop assets than they did ten years ago. Rising electricity rates, utility policy shifts like net metering changes, and an increased desire for grid independence have driven surging interest in battery energy storage systems and whole-home backup capabilities.
Rather than tearing down functioning arrays, installers are using strategic component retrofits to integrate energy storage, upgrade monitoring visibility, and prepare systems for electric vehicle charger loads.
To tap into this recurring revenue stream, successful contractors are moving beyond ad-hoc service calls and establishing structured, tiered service packages. The playbook outlines a three-tier model designed to simplify customer decision-making.
The restore tier focuses on immediate diagnostics, equipment repair, and bringing underperforming arrays back to full operational power. The optimize tier upgrades inverter technology, adds module-level power electronics for enhanced performance, and installs comprehensive monitoring platforms. The future-proof tier prepares the residence for load growth by integrating battery storage systems, backup architecture, and scalable capacity expansions.
Building a reliable repowering pipeline relies heavily on database marketing and proactive local outreach rather than waiting for equipment failures.
Contractors are mining historical customer relationship management records to target systems installed ten or more years ago, utilizing local municipal permit databases to identify aging neighborhood clusters, and partnering with allied trades like roofers and electricians who encounter older hardware during routine home renovations.
Tigo recommends a phased 90-day rollout for installers entering the space. Month one centers on team training, service menu definition, and proposal template creation. Month two initiates targeted outreach and digital optimization via local search engine optimization. Month three focuses on closing initial projects, capturing case studies, and leveraging satisfied customers to build long-term recurring maintenance agreements.
As millions of first-generation solar installations cross the ten-year operational threshold, repowering offers a vital pathway for contractors looking to secure long-term revenue beyond initial construction. By shifting the focus from one-off equipment replacement to consultative customer relationships and comprehensive service tiers, installers can transform aging rooftops into sustainable, multi-decade assets.
