Solar power allowed the European Union to sidestep over EUR40 billion in gas imports from 1 March through 15 October 2026, SolarPower Europe reported. According to the industry body, this saving resulted from solar arrays throughout the bloc producing sufficient electricity to markedly cut gas usage for power generation, bolstering Europe’s energy security and protecting consumers from steeper fossil fuel expenses.
The achievement, announced from Brussels on 15 October 2026, spans the timeframe beginning with the 2026 Middle East war. SolarPower Europe observed that seven months into the conflict, fossil fuel markets continue to be susceptible to geopolitical shocks, and that disruptions previously regarded as unusual are turning into a regular aspect of Europe’s energy situation.
The organization stated that following years of turmoil caused initially by Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and subsequently by the 2026 Middle East war, Europe can no longer view fossil fuel price shocks as separate incidents. It contended that the EU needs to reinforce its economic resilience and further lessen its vulnerability to fossil fuel price swings as a top priority.
Walburga Hemetsberger, who leads SolarPower Europe as chief executive, described the EUR40 billion sum as an expense Europe was spared, and said the continent’s solar capacity has once more proven the worth of domestically produced renewable energy amid geopolitical instability. She noted that Europe continues to face exposure to fossil fuel price fluctuations, with households and companies absorbing the costs, and added that the EU has options to act now and protect consumers from a structural weakness.
SolarPower Europe is urging the EU to implement an emergency set of measures capable of yielding advantages within the coming year while tackling the underlying drivers of Europe’s fossil fuel vulnerability.
The bundle ought to encompass expanding behind-the-meter electrification, solar generation and self-consumption, assisting households and businesses in generating and using more of their own power.
It should further encompass speeding up the rollout of large-scale battery energy storage, lowering how often fossil gas determines electricity prices and allowing more inexpensive renewable electricity to meet demand at peak moments.
SolarPower Europe said it has been tracking the daily savings produced by Europe’s solar capacity via avoided gas imports.
