Solarcentury Africa has commenced full commercial operations at its 34.5 MWp Mailo 2 solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Zambia, bringing the total operational capacity of the Mailo solar project to 59.5 MWp.
The milestone follows the successful completion of construction and grid compliance testing. Mailo 2 represents the second phase of the planned 118 MWp Mailo solar PV development.
The project received equity investment from Solarcentury Africa’s parent company, BB Energy, while Standard Bank South Africa provided debt funding. Alensy Energy Solutions was appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, completing construction in under 12 months.
The second phase builds on the performance of the first phase, which has been operating since July 2025. The initial installation sells electricity on a merchant basis through the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), demonstrating the commercial potential of merchant solar generation in Zambia.
The additional capacity is expected to contribute to Zambia’s electricity supply, support energy security and economic growth, and help the country meet its energy transition objectives.
Mailo is part of Solarcentury Africa’s broader portfolio of 350 MW of solar projects under operation, construction and development across Zambia, highlighting the company’s expanding presence in the country’s renewable energy sector.
Jason de Carteret, Chief Executive Officer of Solarcentury Africa, said the start of commercial operations marked a significant milestone for the project and reflected the efforts and collaboration of the teams involved.
“We are proud to have delivered the second phase of the Mailo development and to continue supporting Zambia’s growing demand for reliable and sustainable electricity,” de Carteret said.
